Sylva - the county seat and closest town to WCU. Primarily single-family homes, with a mix of small businesses and medium-to-large chain stores. Population 2,588.
Bryson City - one of the gateways to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). A popular tourist destination and hub of outdoor activities. Primarily single-family homes and small businesses, with a more rustic character than Cullowhee/Sylva. Population 1,558.
Cherokee - the capital of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and another gateway to the GSMNP. Housing is mostly single-family and rural, with some seasonal mixed in. There is an abundance of businesses catering to tourists. Population 2,195.
Waynesville - a larger town halfway between WCU and Asheville. A popular choice for families and more upscale than Cullowhee/Sylva. Population 9,869.
Asheville - the largest city in Western North Carolina and the location of WCU's satellite Biltmore Park campus. Famous for its tourist attractions and crunchy atmosphere. Population 94,589.
