Educational scholar Pat Hutchings divided scholarship of teaching and learning into two categories in her book, Opening Lines: Approaches to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (2000):
- "What works?"
- This question seeks evidence on the effectiveness of various pedagogies
- "What is happening?"
- This question encourages one to describe what is happening in a learning environment.
