Artstor: Advanced Search

Artstor offers a number of ways to search and access their collections. In the following tabs are a couple of options for using the advanced search option. Starting on Artstor's main page, click on the 'Advanced Search' link under the search box:

You'll then see the advanced search box pop-up:

See the tabs for examples on browsing vs. searching for images. All examples are related to the image requirements you have for your assignment.

Your advanced search doesn't actually need any keywords or artists. Instead, you can search by 'browsing' a classification and adding dates to the search to limit to the time period you are working on. You can also add 'Geography' or you can change that once you hit search.

Here are the results for my search from above. I can then look at geographical locations that have items in my search results. You can click on regions or specific countries to browse smaller groups.

To see a full-size image and more information about the object, click on the image in the results.

To see information on downloading images for your project, click on the 'download images' tab on this page.

To see examples of searching sites other than Artstor, click on the 'Examples' tab on the left side of this guide.

If you have a specific artist, specialty item, or general item type you'd like to look for, add your terms to search box(es) in the upper left and make sure to include the dates for the time period you are exploring. You don't have to choose a classification, but you can if you know the types of objects you want to see.

These search results cover all classifications that include the keywords we used and the time period specified. You can limit by classification and/or geography. If you have only a few results, you can browse them all at once.

Searching this way is a great way to broaden your search for items from a particular time period that might be difficult to find. You can see examples of clothing (like in the above image), but you can also see examples of dresses or suits in photographs, paintings, vase paintings, and more.

There are a couple of options for getting images from Artstor. People will often get screenshots of the images they want, but if you need a high quality version of the image, the download option is your best bet.

You will need to create an account on Artstor (link at the top of the page). You can then use the download button, which appears in the right side of each object's page, to download a high-quality jpg of the object.

For your project, you will probably only want to use the first option on the download.

I also recommend taking a screenshot of the data/information on the right side of the image. That way you have easy access to the information, no matter which pictures you choose.
