Birding

A guide to looking for birds in and around WCU.

Introduction

an image of a tote bag with binoculars, a birding checklist, 2 birding books, and birding guide

Thanks to a generous donation and grant from Highlands Plateau Audubon Society (HPAS), Hunter Library is pleased to offer Birding Bags – tote bags of birding resources that any WCU library user can borrow – to make birding more accessible. We hope that these bags will enhance student and community interest in birding and make birding a more inclusive and enriching experience for all.

We currently have 6 Birding Bags available for checkout for a 1-week (renewable) loan period. To borrow a bag, visit the Circulation desk.

How to focus your binoculars

These instructions are adapted from Forsyth Audubon's website:

  1. Bend your binoculars closer together or farther apart until your eyes can easily look through the oculars (the part you look through). You should see an image in a single circle.
  2. Adjust the eye cups (the fat adjustable rings closest to yours eyes). If you wear glasses, keep the eye cups twisted down. If you don’t wear glasses, twist the eye cups up. If you don’t see what you’re looking at in a single circle, twist the eye cups up a bit.
  3. Close your right eye, look through just your left eye, and turn the focus wheel (the ring in the center with ribbing) until the image is sharp. Try looking at something with lots of details (ex. a sign with lettering).
  4. Close your left eye, look through just your right eye, and turn the diopter ring (the movable ring on the right ocular below the eye cup) to set the difference between your two eyes.
