Criminal Justice 185: Majoring in Criminology & Criminal Justice - Hansen

Overview

There are a few different ways to find articles published by authors affiliated with an institution, including looking for faculty curricula vitae, using Google Scholar, or using a database like Web of Science. Each method has its strengths and weaknesses, and sometimes you may have to use more than one method.

This page will walk you through the process of using Google Scholar to track down WCU Criminal Justice faculty publications.

Using Google Scholar

Step One: Using the link below, navigate to the Criminology & Criminal Justice department page. Scroll to the bottom of the page for a list of CJ faculty.

Step Two: Navigate to Google Scholar (linked below). If you haven't already done so, set up library access links so search results map to Hunter Library holdings (if you have already set up library access links, skip to Step Three). From the Google Scholar homepage, click the hamburger menu in the upper left corner and select "Settings".

Then select "Library links" on the left side of the page. Enter Western Carolina University in the search bar, select "Western Carolina University - FullText@WesternCarolinaU", and save your settings.

Your Google Scholar search results should now link to Hunter Library's holdings for those titles to which we have access.

Step Three: Using Google Scholar, search for faculty members by name. You can search FIRST NAME LAST NAME (i.e., Jamie Vaske); LAST NAME, FIRST NAME (i.e., Vaske, Jamie); or LAST NAME, FIRST INITIAL (i.e., Vaske, J). Notice the links to the right of the search result. If Hunter Library has access to the journal in which the article was published, you should see a link that will take you directly to the text of the article as well as the FullText@WesternCarolinaU link that will show you other available access points.

If you do not see the FullText@WesternCarolinaU link, you can double check if the library has access to the journal by clicking the Journals button on the library homepage and then searching by journal title.

Step Four: Verify that the article you've found was in fact authored (or co-authored) by the correct person. There may be many people with the same name who author papers, so open the article and look for the author's institutional affiliation. Note: If you think you have an article written by a WCU CJ faculty member (in other words, the names and research areas match) but the institutional affiliation doesn't line up, they may have written the article while pursuing their graduate studies or while employed elsewhere.

Final Thoughts: Make sure to save your article so you can return to it later! If you opened a PDF directly from Google Scholar, you can save it to your computer. If you followed the FullText@WesternCarolinaU link and accessed the article through a database, you should see many of the same tools (e.g., download, save to Google Drive, etc.) noted on the Finding Scholarly Articles page.
