Boost Your Scholarly Profile!: Task 3: Create your scholarly ID

Learn tricks for creating, maintaining, and updating your scholarly presence online.

Create a unique scholarly ID

Create a scholarly ID#, such as the ORCID, in order to have a unique number to associate with your scholarship.

This is especially helpful if:

  • you have the same name as other scholars in your field
  • you have changed your name (or plan to) at some point in your career
  • you sign your name slightly differently each time you publish: Cynthia Smith, Cynthia Elizabeth Smith, Cindy Elizabeth Smith, Cindy E. Smith
  • you are known by a nickname but publish under your full, formal name

ORCID

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a non-profit project (the ORCID community is comprised of scholars and academic publishers) that is designed to "provide a registry of unique researcher identifiers and a transparent method of linking research activities and outputs to these identifiers." Basically, it is a DOI or ISBN for a scholar!  Once you set up an ORCID account, you will have a unique number/URL to your scholarship.

You can now log in with your WCU Credentials (look for "Access through your institution").If you already have an ORCID, you can link your account to the WCU login.

Researcher ID (Web of Science)

Now that you have set up your ORCID, you may be ready to go one louder. If so, set up your Researcher ID in Web of Science, which can be linked to your ORCID. Here are the steps:

If you want to search Web of Science, you will need to access it through the library's subscription:
