In support of Western Carolina University’s mission, Hunter Library serves the curricular and research needs of students, faculty, and staff while encouraging academic success, fostering critical thinking, and enriching the community. The library fulfills this mission by providing access to information; offering research and instruction services; and preserving the intellectual, environmental, and cultural heritage of the university and the region.
Everyone is welcome at the library. Here are the resources available to our visitors, alumni, and friends of the library.
Parking on campus can be tricky! Metered parking is available, but the metered spots are far from the library. We recommend getting a day pass from the machine in front of the Cordelia Camp Building. It's $1 per day and the machine only takes cards, no cash. This pass allows you to park in any regular student or faculty/staff parking spot.
Disability parking is available at the corner of Central Drive and Buzzard's Roost Road. A link for more information is below.
Once you have your pass, the easiest place to find parking during the day is behind the library in Lot 37 (circled in red on the second map). Lot 37 is down a steep hill from the library. If walking up steep hills isn't for you, there are small parking lots (circled in blue on the second map) in front of McKee and on Central Drive between the Cullowhee Baptist Church and Homebase, though these smaller lots are usually full from 8 AM to 5 PM.
North Carolina-based graduates of Western Carolina University are eligible to sign up for a 10-day pass to NC LIVE online resources with the use of an email address. After the 10 days, the system will direct alumni to their nearest public library using the zip code provided at set up.
Through NC LIVE, North Carolina residents will have access to articles, e-books, videos, magazines, and newspapers to support many areas of life after graduation such as career development, genealogy, health and wellness, and language learning.
Students, faculty, and staff from Southwestern Community College with SCC ID cards also have borrowing privileges.
Students, faculty, and staff from other UNC universities have borrowing privileges through the Cooperative Lending Agreement.
Please see the links below for more information about borrowing privileges and the Cooperative Lending Agreement.
To support the partnership between WCU's College of Education and Allied Professions and western North Carolina public schools, Hunter Library offers borrowing privileges to SETUP teachers.
More information about borrowing privileges and SETUP are found below.
Becoming a friend helps Hunter Library in many ways! In turn, the library offers our members benefits. Benefits include the ability to borrow physical items like books and media, in-library access to electronic resources, and invitations to events.
Hunter Library offers limited access to Catamount School students, Aramark/contract employees, Life@WCU participants, WCU campus ministers, spouse of WCU members, and Highlands Biological Station employees.
