Linking Academic and Community Guidelines for Community-Engaged Scholarship Research universities seeking to promote community-engaged scholarship (CES), defined here as research of mutual benefit to community and academic interests, will discover that it requires capacity building and institutional support. At the University of California at Merced, our 7-year experience in building a new public research university that integrates CES into the fabric of the campus has benefited from the lessons of pioneers in the field. We have also gained valuable experiences that can serve those who wish to integrate CES into their research and problem-solving activities. In this article, we extend Blanchard et al.’s (2009) useful guide for faculty development in CES. By adding reference to the competencies that can guide community participation in and support of CES, the expanded guide encompasses both academic and community interests and highlights best practices necessary for supporting CES in our universities and communities.
In It Together: Community Based Research Guidlines for Communities and Higher Education This monograph, prepared originally in 2007 and updated in 2021, offers advice for both community-based and campus-based people who wish to form partnerships for collaborative, community-based research (CBR).
Toolkit for Developing Community Partnerships The SC CTSI supports community-engaged research that brings researchers, clinicians and the community together to share their knowledge, skills and resources with a common goal of improving the health of Los Angeles communities. This toolkit is intended to be a resource for researchers, health care providers and the community who are interested in conducting community-engaged research. This community partnership toolkit outlines the process and approach needed during every phase of a project (e.g. relationship building, proposal development, project execution and dissemination).
Principles of Best Practice for Community-Based Research Proposes a community-based research (CBR) model that is genuinely collaborative and driven by community rather than campus interests; that democratizes the creation and dissemination of knowledge; and that seeks to achieve positive social change. Demonstrates how this model translates into principles that underlie the practice of CBR in four areas: campus-community partnerships, research design and process, teaching and learning, and the institutionalization of centers to support CBR.
