History: Teaching Resources: Teaching Websites

One of the most useful websites to support the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. A project of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Education, LEARN NC finds the most innovative and successful practices in K–12 education and makes them available to the teachers and students of North Carolina — and the world. One of the most useful features of the site is the interactive curriculum standards and aligned instructional resources. To find teaching resources, locate the subject and grade level in the standards, then click on the desired goals and objectives. For many subject areas, a link will appear under the selected objective to "find related resources." The site also includes a field trip finder by county in North Carolina.

Resources for teaching U.S. and World History. The site includes he Reading Like a Historian curriculum, which engages students in historical inquiry. Each lesson revolves around a central historical question and features sets of primary documents designed for groups of students with diverse reading skills and abilities.

The Zinn Education Project promotes and supports the use of Howard Zinn’s best-selling book A People’s History of the United States and other materials for teaching a people’s history in middle and high school classrooms across the country. The website offers more than 100 free, downloadable lessons and articles organized by theme, time period, and reading level. The Zinn Education Project is coordinated by two non-profit organizations, Rethinking Schools and Teaching for Change.
