Accessing materials

Hunter Library’s Special Collections has a unique selection of Cherokee-language materials including children’s books, elementary and middle grade textbooks, hymnals, and biblical translations. Many of these resources are printed in-house or by the Kituwah Preservation and Education Program (KPEP) in Cherokee, NC. The materials listed below are accessible online, available for check-out from Hunter Library, or can be browsed in the Special Collections’ Reading Room.

For an interactive experience with the Cherokee language, visit “Walking Around” (Fall 2022), a large board with Cherokee words in syllabary/romanization created by the Cherokee Language program. Press the black paw prints to hear Wiggins Blackfox (EBCI), a native Cherokee speaker who works closely with the Cherokee Language program, say the word out loud. It is located in the McKee Building on the 1st floor near Room 107.
